where of an example type of invoice/brief you
might want to consider getting people to sign
before you begin the work. It makes life a lot
easier down the line, when things are done on a
more professional level.

If ya can get me that form/contract that would be great!!!...Me doing HOME FREELANCE work for years...I know that I usually ask for half of the price before I even start...I've been rooked once and learned my lesson after that...So half of the price down is what I do now.

Can I get a discount for being me? I mean seriously, just having your name gracing anything with me on it should only help you out, so in reality, you should probably just pay me for the honor of working on something with my name attached to it.

But hey, are those prices for just the artwork, or do you include copies with it, and if so, how many copies and such? What does one get for their money, exactly?

As for your question...Me working at graphic design companies all my life...I know how it all works. My prices are just for the artwork alone...which is pretty reasonable compared to actual CD places that charge $1000 or higher for graphics. As for the copies or prints...That's me having to take the work I've done to a printer and then having to pay them for them printing it. You throw in ,depending if it's a simple artwork,...as in printers charge for every color used...so me being that most of my stuff would be 4 color process which means graphics with photos and such and alot of Photoshop used...It would cost more. Printers work by how many colors used for what you want printed. It would mean more money for the printer to do so, then you're talking about the quantity and bothsides printed on...and then to top that off...we're talking about what kinda stock(paper) to use depending on the pounds(thickness) of paper then if ya want Flat or Glossy. A Lot goes into the whole printing job that people don't know.
So, to answer your question....I'd have to add more cost on my end to actually pay the printer and to actually make money for myself. It wouldn't be worth my time....me doing all the artwork only to get paid for it and having to pay the printer with that money I made...I wouldn't profit on anything. And with this CD Artwork it's my time of many hours that my whole point is to bring myself some income for what I do.
So, Yes...me having to get it printer ready and taking the work and dealing with the printers...that would mean more money just for the printing cost alone.

Digital print is a good alternative if people don't wanna spend the $$$, you can get a good job without all the plates etc and 4 col process hassle, and to be honest nowadays the quality of digital is gettin' pretty hard to tell the difference.

BUT as Raggz said there's SO much that people don't see or consider, so Raggz bump them prices bro!!!!! [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Sikkly's right, unless a particular Photoshop
project (as opposed to video post-production,
web-based stuff etc.) is of high priority,
there isn't really any reason to go down the
colour seperation route. What normally happens
nowadays, is that, the client takes his PSD/TIFF/
or whatever file down to the printers, and
they'll find that their (short-run, at least)
printers are fairly sufficient. The only caveat
for the designer being, to make sure his monitor
is calibrated properly so there's no argy-bargy
when the client takes the file to the printers
and their unforgiving Macs display lots of unex-
pected differences in colour.

For a big job, though, it actually makes far
more (financial) sense to get it the thing
printed more traditionally.

Raggz - most of my erstwhile CD work is now
archived away on hard-disks that aren't plugged
into this PC. The last CD job I did, is still
No Connection's - www.no-connection.com

Funnily enough, I actually use Photoshop more
now that I'm more involved in video production -
exporting frames into Photoshop, applying PShop
effects, sending them to After Effects, then all
that back into Premiere Pro etc.

Personally, though, the ideal designer setup
would be: AVID suite and a G5 running Final Cut
Pro, Shake, Motion and After Effects.

I've got access to most of it, but to buy it
all, is something like 25K. [img]frown.gif[/img]

Carl - I personally deliver a CD-R containing,
not only the final render, but a Photoshop version
with all of its layer still 'intact' so it's
possibly for the client - providing they know
what they're doing - can tweak things at the
last minute without having to email the designer,
who may (or may not) be available.

Yes agreed with Sikkly and Darren.
Now days if ya put everything all together on a disc...it's much easier for the printers to deal with...Keep in mind that the printing company must be up to date on all their uses. I've been to some printers who dont' know jack shit...and turn you out a lousy job...As Darren mentioned...if ya want exact colors as on the artwork ya gotta be sure the printers colors are colaberated as mention...or else ya can end up with something that is way off the color register.
Even these days with the technology being better...some companies who don't want to update due to money...they will still use the color seperation method...I've been to a few printers who still use that, But I'm with Sikkly and Darren...it's much easier to just hand the printer a disc with all the artwork keeping in mind that they know what to do and how to deal with it.

And Darren and Sikkly...
I use nothing but photoshop...if I have to actually draw something myself for the idea I want... I will used FREEHAND and Illustrator for that, but then just drag it into Photoshop.

Yes, my prices are doing the graphics and you getting a cd with all the files that are to be printed...Files are saved in high resolution for better and nice crisp prints. So what ya get from my prices is my time spent for doing all the artwork needed...and the customer gets a cd as mentioned above. If it means me having to deal with the printer for you...and me over-seeing that everything goes well and as it is supposed to be...then for sure another charge will be added...and that charge is to pay the printer for the job. My prices are for me alone...for my time spent.
